Batch 12: Light Field Lab & Apollo Fusion

Light Field Lab: Light Field Lab is creating a holographic system that doesn’t require the use of a headset but rather just requires their displays. They do this by using many layers of waveguide glass to allow our eye to see the objects differently. The objects look to be coming out of the display based on how the light hits our eyes. Currently, their demo is 4″x6″ but they want to fuse these together to create an 18-inch display. These displays would then be placed next to each other to cover a wall and project holograms tens of feet out. In the fall of 2018, they announced their partnership with OTOY to create a full stack of original content paired with the Light Field Lab’s displays to create a completely new media experience. They raised a $7m seed round in January of 2018 from Khosla Ventures and Sherpa Capital.

Apollo Fusion: Apollo Fusion has developed electric thrusters for satellites that significantly outperforms its competitors. Their thruster has the ability to not only raise the orbit, adjust it’s plane, or phasing but also has a high specific impulse for long-term station-keeping. Their thrusters produce a 2-3x better impulse per mass & volume than any other propulsion company thus allowing for smaller thrusters for the same mission or more power in the same volume. They have an amazing team led by Mike Cassidy who has been CEO and Co-Founder of 4 other high-tech companies: Ruba (acquired by Google), Xfire (acquired by MTV for $110 million), Direct Hit (acquired by Ask Jeeves for $500 million), and Stylus Innovation (acquired by Artisoft for $13 million). They raised $10m round in July of 2018 from Reid Hoffman.
